Science Trip to Cambridge University

Last month a select group of Year 10 students were invited on a science trip to visit the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, the place where Cambridge University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy is based and where some of the discoveries that the pupils learn about in GCSE Science were made. The students were given some incredible opportunities during their time at the University, with their time there proving to be both insightful and informative. Following the trip, Nathan K in Year 10 wrote the following report:

‘If you had to name a place with a long and rich history in science you would probably say Cambridge University. In December, we visited the Cavendish section of Cambridge University. To start the day off, we were given a tour of their museum, starting with the equipment used by Henry Cavendish (the founder of this science department), to Chadwick’s machine to detect neutrons, all the way to Watson and Cricks’ structure of DNA. After this brief but comprehensive tour we learnt about how light works, answering some exam-style questions at the end.

With a quick break for some food, we worked on making a telescope with a lens and lamp, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Whilst we were doing this, Mrs Ingham and Miss Lake were very kindly given some equipment from the labs there such as spectrometers and oscilloscopes. We were also very kindly gifted lots of other equipment by the university such as lenses, mass balances and ray boxes. For the last activity at the Cavendish department, we had a mini lecture on how images are taken of the universe. We even got to use some special red filters.

Towards the end of the trip we got to learn more about how university works and were also given career advice. Leading on from this, we visited one of the colleges of the university to have a look around. Overall this was a very educational and exciting science trip and we enjoyed learning a lot more about the way universities work.’
