Sustainability at Croxley Danes School
At Croxley Danes, sustainability features in many aspects of daily school life. We are committed to fostering environmental awareness through our curriculum, operations, and community partnerships.
Sustainability in the Curriculum
From Year 7 through to Year 13, students engage with environmental concepts, transitioning from understanding core issues to analysing high-level solutions. An overview of our sustainability curriculum can be viewed here.
Student Leadership & Action
We believe in empowering students to take the lead. Our People and Planet group meets weekly to champion sustainability, successfully leading the school to achieve Eco-Schools accreditation.
Recent student-led projects include:
-
Biodiversity: Enhancing our pond area with species identification and a new ‘bug hotel.’
-
Community: Designing a Croxley Green Eco Trail in partnership with the Croxley Green Parish Council.
-
Awareness: Delivering assemblies on a ‘Green Christmas’ and conducting local litter picks.
Sustainability is also a key responsibility within our Year 11 and 13 Prefect roles.
Strategic Climate Action
In conjunction with Let’s Go Zero, we have developed a rigorous Climate Action Plan. Recent operational improvements linked to this include:
-
Energy Conservation: Re-programming lighting sensors and adjusting Air Handling Units to ensure they do not run longer than necessary.
-
Resource Management: Reducing refrigeration use during holidays (in collaboration with HCL).
-
Future Planning: We are currently exploring grants to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points on school grounds.
Sustainable Travel
We are proud to hold ‘Very Good’ status through the Modeshift STARS Travel Plan Accreditation. Currently, approximately 70% of our students walk or cycle to school, supported by our excellent cycling facilities. Our initiatives to promote safe, active travel include:
-
Road Safety assemblies.
-
Biking lessons within the PE curriculum.
-
Bike Marking and Maintenance workshops during 'Bike to School Week'.
Community
Our commitment to the environment extends to our families. The Parent Teacher and Student Association (PTSA) do a fantastic job coordinating second-hand uniform collections and sales. This initiative reduces waste, raises valuable funds for the school, and offers a cost-effective solution for families.
Outside of the school, we have strong links with other local schools and community organisations. A good example of this is that we coordinate the annual Croxley Green Eco Youth Forum on Earth Day which involves all the local primary schools. This has typically featured input from different local groups - most recently Three Rivers District Council and Woodoaks Farm who contributed to the 2025 event on biodiversity.
