Posted on: 21st Jul 2022Battlefields Trip Summer 202257 year 10 students and seven staff spent the weekend of the 15th - 18th of July touring the WW1 memorials of Northern France and Belgium, as well as soaking up some local seaside culture and plenty of sunshine. Historical highlights included visits to the Trench of Death, Vimy Ridge, and Wellington Quarry, where students were transported 20 metres underground to experience the conditions that soldiers would have worked in when tunnelling towards enemy positions. Two Croxley Danes students also participated in the memorial ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, laying a wreath on behalf of the school and setting up a tradition we hope will continue for many years to come. Students also took advantage of the opportunity to explore the French city of Arras and Belgium’s Ypres (pronounced like the clippers without the ‘cl’, so a friendly local informed us, rather than ‘wipers’ - the preferred pronunciation of WW1 British soldiers). The trip was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. It is planned to run next year between the 16th and 19th July for students of GCSE History and Religious Studies (REPS).
