Languages Week Oracy Competition

Croxley Danes School held an Oracy competition to coincide with celebrating Languages week earlier this month. Students were asked to voice record themselves reciting one of two poems or a poem in their own language. Recordings were uploaded to Show My Home Work.

The poem choices were The British (serves 60 million) by Benjamin Zephaniah, or Languages by Carl Sandburg, both poems celebrating the rich diverse society we live in.

Shetland based teacher, poet and linguist Nat Hall judged the competition. Ms Hall is a speaker of French, English, German, the Shetland dialect and some Norwegian, and holds languages as central to the way she sees and interprets the world around her.

She had her first collection of poems published in 2016 and her latest work due for publication is written in English, the Shetland dialect and Norwegian.

The entries were impressive and the winners extremely hard to choose from; however, after much deliberation, Ms Hall, who sent her judgements by video, selected the following students who claimed the winning places:

1st – Robbie Y9

2nd – Jessica Y7

3rd – Jake Y9

Well done to everyone who participated!
